Products using you
This project is based on the theory of emotional design. During my research I realized that there is a hierarchy between human and product. We use products and feel like we own them. The product doesn't influence us. Some products that have a personal influence, but this is almost never premeditated. The products I created are products that influence us instead of only us influencing the products. This is not because they have any high tech functions, but just because of their designed form.
I see these designs as a conversation starter rather than furniture. What if we would literaly see the liters of water we are using? What if we would see every part of our dinner table as a different area? This project is a good example of my mentality towards learning. I never worked with Sketch-Up before, but I wanted to and that was the reason why I learned it myself in a day.
More and more people are working at home. This is a place where you can choose wherever and how you work, but this mostly results in not having a workspace at all. People work (unconsciously) on their dinner table or couch, which makes them distracted. This table with multiple slidable parts forces you to rethink it's different functions without having different rooms or a lot of space.
We put things in cupboards because we don't need them right now or because we don't want a mess. Because we can hide things anyway, we are more likely to buy things we don't need.
In this cupboard everything is visible. You are more conscious of the stuff you have, because
you are constantly confronted with it. The cupboard consist out of different levels. For each product you have to decide on which level to put it. This creates a moment of thinking about the product and it's value you miss when there is one shelf were you can just put everything on.
The sink influences you by literally showing the amount of water you are using in the form of liter bottles. This is way more confronting then only knowing the numbers.
Most houses these days are designed so that you can arrange your furniture the way you want. We buy more furniture and place it wherever we want. By pre-arranging a space and 'blocking' the floor around it you are literally confronted with how the products are placed and how much space there is.
